Terms of Use

1. Scope and subject matter

These terms govern the use of malwarebuster, operated by Julian Wessels (the provider), Herbergsweg 3, 26904 Börger, Germany.

malwarebuster compares the files of a Joomla or WordPress installation against the original files of the corresponding official release and reports the differences. It additionally checks for patterns typical of malicious code and, on request, produces a machine assessment.

2. Cost

Use is currently free of charge in full. The scan remains free permanently. For the AI analysis we reserve the right to charge in future; no charge arises until it has been stated before use and confirmed by you.

Free use creates no entitlement to continued availability or to any particular set of features.

3. Your obligations

You may only have installations checked that you are entitled to check — as the owner, or with the owner's express permission. Uploading the bridge file over FTP serves as evidence of that entitlement.

You are responsible for your own complete backup of the installation, in particular before approving any change to files.

You undertake to remove the bridge file once a scan is complete. It expires after 24 hours in any case.

4. Licence keys for commercial extensions

If your installation holds licence keys for commercial extensions, we use them to fetch the corresponding original packages from the respective vendors. This is technically necessary: without the original package we cannot establish whether the installed files were altered.

The key is used for that download only, sent only to the respective vendor's own update address, and not stored. We do not use it to obtain, redistribute or operate software.

From the fetched packages we derive checksums. Those checksums describe a version, not your installation, and are reused to check other installations of the same version. We do not pass on files or program code from the packages.

You confirm that you are entitled to use the licence keys held in your installation for this purpose. If in doubt, check your vendor's licence terms; we cannot assess them for you. If you do not want this, remove the key from the configuration before scanning.

5. No promises about the outcome

We give no warranty that malicious code will be detected or removed completely, that a reported finding really is malicious code, or that your installation will still work after a change you approved.

The comparison covers the file system only. Database content, user accounts, credentials and server configuration are not examined. Files belonging to extensions for which no original package is publicly obtainable are reported as “not verifiable” and not as clean.

Removing one backdoor does not make a compromised installation clean.

6. Liability

We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and under the German Product Liability Act.

For ordinary negligence we are liable only for breach of a material contractual obligation, limited to the foreseeable damage typical of the contract. Liability is otherwise excluded.

This limitation applies in particular to damage arising from changes to files that you approved individually — the risks are set out to you expressly before the first approval.

7. Suspension and termination

We may suspend access where there is reasonable suspicion that installations are being checked without entitlement, or that the service is being misused.

You may delete your account at any time. Deleting a project removes the scan data belonging to it.

8. Governing law

German law applies. Mandatory consumer protection provisions of the state in which you have your habitual residence remain unaffected.
